Nicky Farquhar – Barnsley House

We recently spent some time at the beautiful ‘Barnsley House’ in the Cotswolds and were put in touch with Interior Designer Nicky Farquhar, the vision behind their interiors. We love her work both at Barnsley House and also with some of her residential London projects; so we recently caught up with her to get her insights on the world of Interior Design.

What made you want to become an Interior Designer?

[NICKY FARQUHAR]

I originally worked in advertising and interior design was more of a hobby and interest for me. I was then lucky enough to take this interest to the next level and study interior design at the Inchbald. I enjoy the challenges and variety of work and appreciate all aspects of design which is constantly evolving. I appreciate aesthetic beauty.

We love your work at Barnsley House. What and who were your design influences for Barnsley House?

[NF]

I worked with a great team when doing Barnsley House, lead by Martin Hulbert. The stunning Rosemary Verey designed gardens and the house itself were the main influences. We wanted to create a sympathetic, classic interior that befitted the beautiful house and gardens, yet was not old fashioned or too traditional.

What's your favourite part of the hotel?

[NF]

That is tricky! Many different parts of the hotel, outside and in, have their own special qualities… afternoon tea on the terrace outside the dining room on a sunny day is hard to beat, surveying the gardens, but also The Potting Shed bedroom set in the middle of the garden is so unique and wonderful.

What does the word "relaxation" mean to you?

[NF]

Relaxation to me is Peace and Comfort. If this comes with delicious food, in a beautiful setting with some added luxury then all the better! Barnsley offers this, especially in some of the garden rooms, such as The Secret Garden where you can literally shut yourself off, and relax in a beautiful hot tub while looking out at your own private garden. A real treat for me is to unwind in the Garden Spa and have a spoiling Aromatherapy Massage.

What fabrics do you like to use?

[NF]

I favour natural fabrics and use a lot of linen. I like to contrast this with other textures such as velvets and leathers and try and mix things up a bit so that it is not too predictable. The challenge with doing a hotel is to find the balance between the practical and the beautiful, while still being affordable.

Each room at the hotel is different, how much of the furniture did you make bespoke and how much did you source?

[NF]

The vast majority of furniture is made bespoke.  However, being in the Cotswold's there are a surplus of wonderful antique shops on our doorstep and this also proved very inspiring when doing the hotel design.

Do you have any insider secrets you would like to share with us?

[NF]

Sorry but I like my secrets to remain just that.....secret!
